Danish Energy Company Focuses on Smart Grid

Danish Energy Company Focuses on Smart Grid
By Rune Homann

Dong Energy is a leading energy group in Northern Europe located in Denmark. Their mission is to create energy in a cleaner way for the environment, as they produce energy for over a million people.  Through the use of a smart grid they plan on reducing  the CO2 emissions by putting wind turbines in locations that will produce the most energy. With people wanting the planet to go green DONG Energy wants to establish themselves as a dominate energy company while not negatively effecting the climate.

In order for that vision to be brought to life they went to geospatial technologies and employed ArcGIS to evaluate the company’s network of customers and where the most energy is needed and pin point where energy is not at any given moment. Through the awareness and access of updated data on electrical output in the network grid by using GIS they can begin estimating how much power will be needed in the future annually.

With GIS advancing company’s like DONG Energy are more than willing to use the systems, as they were reluctant before because it took awhile to analyze the data, which was time they didn’t have. Now GIS has become faster and more efficient, so company’s can generate data more quickly and come up with solutions to their problems. For example Carbon emissions that energy companies are now dealing with.
Now that DONG Energy has established a smart grid for it’s network they can now map out places that will benefit the most when deciding where to put electrical charges for the growing industry of electric cars. Through the use of energy being generated by wind power they can send that energy to where it’s needed at that moment to ensure that the energy is being used efficiently and that all the costomers are being supplied a reliable amount of energy. Another problem that has been solved by GIS data is the replacement of copper cables underground that would have be a huge cost to the company and now they can see where and when certain copper cables need to be replaced.

GIS has a tremendous value to companies like DONG Energy and is becoming increasing important to understand and analyze the data, as it will and can save money, time, research, and probably most of all the state of the environment.

  1. This article is a great example of GIS application because it is showing the economical benefits of using GIS to plan changes such as replacing copper cables to installing new wind turbines. Not only has DONG energy saved time by using GIS to track the areas with the most energy production, but they have also saved Denmark a lot of money by not having to run experimental calculations to understand where the energy was needed the most.

  2. I was just abroad in Denmark this past summer, and I got to study this a little bit! Another development to use with the smart grid is a "smart house." Basically, there are peak hours when a lot of people are using electricity at once - to do laundry, run the dishwasher, etc which makes electricity rates more expensive. With a smart house connected to the grid, appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines and dryers can be set to turn on when electricity usage is low, cutting the cost of electricity. What would be interesting would be a project using GIS to compare energy usage in smart houses compared to regular houses.
