Late Night Dining in Georgetown, Texas

In the map above, I mapped out nine restaurants that are open after 10pm in Georgetown, Texas. I picked restaurants that are close to Southwestern's campus so that this can be helpful for Southwestern students. Late night fast food is becoming an important culture and economic aspect of life. As we continue innovating as a society, people tend to stay up later, trying to get more things done. This also is very important for a college town, because college age kids tend to be up late into the night. Late night restaurants are also important if they are close to a big highway, such as I-35, as some people travel late at night, and may get hungry and stop for food.

Gtography: Food delivery in proximity to Southwestern. This map depicts food delivery near Southwestern. There is not a large selection of food delivery in Georgetown. The majority of the delivery food is pizza, however there is also Mama Fu's and Chinese Food.com

GTography: Living and Study Spots Relative to Campus

This map displays the various location of apartments in Georgetown with a star rating of 3.0 or above that are within reasonable vicinity of campus. This map, using these apartments, can also provide the subsidiary purpose of showing places that students could investigate in terms of deciding where to live due to their close proximity. Additionally, this map also has a few locations that can provide a study location for students in between class who do not wish to commute from their place of residence to school and back constantly each class day. Using this map, students can have a visual that can help them with present day activities as well as future decisions.

GTography: Locations in Georgetown for Casual Drinking

This map displays the locations of all the places that have an open bar in Georgetown relative to the location of Southwestern. Georgetown is not a young demographic so there is an extremely limited amount of activities for young adults. Majority of the activities are in Round Rock or Austin, but this map hopes to serve the purpose of providing the locations for restaurants and places with bars that could provide a night of casual drinking and excitement for a young audience.

GTography: Independent Mexican & Italian Restaurants in Georgetown, TX.

Georgetown certainly has no dearth of independent restaurants to eat at! Two of the most popular cuisines in Georgetown are Italian and Mexican. This map shows the independent (that is, not chains) locations of restaurants throughout the town. There are considerably more Mexican restaurants than Italian ones. Surprisingly, more restaurants hover around I-35 instead of downtown.

This map shows the locations of pizza places throughout Georgetown, Texas, as well as their proximity to Southwestern University. As you can see, most of the pizza places are located West of Southwestern, with only one located to the East. Overall, there are sixteen pizza spots in Georgetown, with a clustering around the downtown area.

Small Business Doctors in the Georgetown Area

This map shows the locations of small locally owned Doctors businesses. The Red symbols show the businesses around the Georgetown location. Using the method of GTopography, these locations were mapped out. In the map, it shows clearly how no location is to the east of our campus (shown by the yellow symbol). All locations are west of our campus. Mapping out these small businesses could help students, who might prefer a local/smaller consultant, rather than a bigger company. I also tried to map out bigger emergency center, but there were so few near the Georgetown area. Having quite a bit of small doctor offices, it is surprising that many students still do not know about these locations. Hopefully in the future, knowledge of these doctors increases and students or the community in Georgetown use them.

GTography: Race and City Council Members in Georgetown

This map shows the distribution of Hispanic populations in Georgetown and city council districts.  Georgetown has 7 city council districts and a high Hispanic population (21.8%).  Cities are typically racially segregated, as seen in GIS lab #18.  Here, it is apparent that some council districts (like that of Councilman Gonzalez) have high populations of Hispanics, while other districts (like that of Councilman Hesser) have very small Hispanic populations.  This means that issues faced by Hispanic populations might be dealt with more heavily by those council members located with heavy clusters of Hispanic populations.  The city council person for Southwestern University is Rachael Jonrowe, District 6.  Data for this map was obtained from the city of Georgetown and Williamson County GIS databases.

Georgetown City Park Locations Compared to Median Household Income Values

Want to go outside and play? Find a park, Georgetown is full of them. In fact, there are 30 city parks total.  Referring to the Georgetown Parks website, I plotted the location of 28 out of 30 city parks. Then, I used Fact Finder on the Census website to map out reported median incomes in Williamson County. There is a higher density of parks in the lowest income bracket in Georgetown. The middle brackets have few parks. The upper middle class has many parks separated by at least a mile. The upper class subdivision does not have any public parks.

Notice, each income level is distinctly separated in Georgetown. The highest income level lies farthest away from the downtown, while the lowest income levels are nearest the downtown. Parks may be more prevalent in lower income areas because there is a higher need, whereas upper class subdivisions tend to have larger private yards. More, the low income sector in Georgetown also overlaps the historic district. Perhaps, the parks were built first and as development spreads north, there are fewer parks being built.

This map focuses on the amount of elderly, ages 65 and up in Georgetown, TX. Each dot indicates 5 elderly. From the map, one can see the area of Sun City, located down Willams drive, south Willamson county down I-35, and east near Hutto have dense amounts of elderly in the area. 

GTography: Breakfast Tacos in Georgetown, Texas

Texas is known for serving delicious breakfast tacos, especially in the Austin/Georgetown area. This map displays all of the restaurants that serve breakfast tacos in Georgetown. I used yellowpages.com to find the addresses, uploaded them onto arcgis.com, and created a map displaying the locations. The map shows an interesting clustering of restaurants right off of highway I-35, and also on the main streets that lead to I-35. The clustering in these areas probably occur because people would rather stop somewhere on route to their workplace, rather than go completely out of their way, when commuting to work.
